Though the name Nuad Phaen Boran sounds like that of a person, it refers to a massage therapy practised in Thailand. This ancient system of healing works on the principle that an illness can be treated only by treating the entire body as energies flow along a network of channels or lines in the human body. Hence,a combination of acupressure, asanas, stretching, palming, thumbing and gentle twisting is used by the therapist to ensure the equilibrium of energies.
Nuad Phaen Boran dates back to the times of Gautama Buddha as Jivaka Kumara Bhaccha, the physician of Buddha , was the founder of this massage. The surprising thing about this massage is that no creams or oils are needed for this and the receiver remains fully clothed during the process. In the case of illness, hot herbal compresses are given for pain relief. The message will begin with the receiver lying on a mat on the floor and with the chanting of slokas by the therapist. This will set in a spiritual tranquilising atmosphere ideal for relaxation and healing of the body and the mind. At first, the receiver will lie on his back changing his positions to his side, face down and sitting. During the massage the masseur will apply pressure with his fingers, elbows, arms and feet. The feet is treated with the touch therapy moving the energy upward thus helping the circulation of energy. The whole process may take about 2 hours to complete. Since the massage resembles the method of Yoga it is also called Passive Yoga.
