Teacher: Why, what’s special about an elephant?
Student: The elephant is the largest animal living on land. It is the biggest and the strongest, and it never eats non-veg!
The student is right. The diet of an elephant ranges from roots, bark, grass, leaves, fruits and seedpods and it still stands healthy and lives a life of at least 70 years despite any age related illnesses. Thus, the elephant stands evidence to the strength of a simple vegan diet. Many people look down upon vegetarians and consider vegetarianism as a lifestyle of the weak hearted and the emotional. They even condemn the advocates of vegetarianism. Of course, what you eat is your own choice and no body has the right to tell you what to eat and drink.
Animal slaughter is not the only reason why I write this article. The aim is to create awareness that by shifting on to vegetarian diet you can check deforestation, to control methane emissions caused by cattle rearing, to preserve water and to secure more fertile land for cultivation.
- Preserving our ecological balance is very important for our life. Have you thought where these meats come from and how? As meat eaters increase, more and more of forest lands are acquired by cattle rearers to rear their animals making matters worse for our ecology.
- A flatulent cow emits a massive amount of methane through belching. Methane is far more potent than carbon dioxide and is highly responsible of global warming. The numbers may be shocking!
- For so many McDies and Pizza Huts to thrive, a lot of land is used for agriculture and cattle rearing. Agriculturists point out that the land used for cattle rearing is rendered useless for growing crops after a while.
- Water is precious. But do you know that it takes 2,400 litres of water to get you a hamburger, from the very beginning of rearing the animal to processing the meat?
If you have been rethinking your switching over to a vegetarian diet then these non vegetarian facts are sufficient to bring you back to your senses.
The Vegetarian Facts
- No meat means no saturated fat in turn means low chances of obesity.
- Low fat means lower blood pressure levels and low cholesterols. Regular consumption of red meat, eggs and whole fat milk products may contribute to high blood cholesterol.
- The dietary fibre in the vegetarian foods will ensure a steady supply of energy, lightness and satisfaction.
- Foods prepared in high temperatures risk the production of carcinogens. And the fecal concentration of carcinogens increase the risk of colon cancer in meat eaters.
- A lower incidence of stroke is seen in vegans with their diet of cruciferous and green leafy vegetables and citrus fruits.
