Odours are unpleasant. Mouth odours are embarrassing. When you have bad breath or body odour you don’t realise it soon. Your good neighbour may not react to it in front of you in fear of hurting you and embarrassing himself. A good friend may make a suggestion from which you take the hint, if you are brilliant. Or you remain, unaware of your problem. It is best to check for bad breath yourself or to get help from your spouse or a child. You can also try this: lick your wrist, wait for a few seconds and smell it.

The reason we have so many mints, bubble gums and mouth washes in our drug store is because many of us have Halitosis. You really don’t have to worry if these products can take care of your predicament along with the practice of good hygiene. If they don’t, in a permanent way, you may want to see your dentist to make a diagnosis.

Bad breath is caused by the bacteria in your mouth. Dental problems, the food you eat, dry mouth and the use of tobacco products can cause bad breath. Often poor dental hygiene, gum diseases and plaque contributes to your predicament. Plaque irritates your gums and causes dental decay. As food particles remain in your mouth they collect bacteria and emit hydrogen sulphide vapours. Hence lack of hygiene can lead to both Periodontal diseases and Halitosis.

Foods broken down inside the mouth and those containing volatile oils  leads to mouth odour. Onion and garlic serve as good examples. Working people do not like eating raw onion or foods containing onion or garlic as they cause mouth odour. They are seen to chew a mint or bite a clove if at all they do. When these foods get digested, their pungent oils reach the lungs and come out in your breath.

The mouth receives its moisture, ability to taste, chew and swallow from the saliva secreted. You notice that you have a very bad breath in the morning in spite of your brushing the teeth in the night. In the night, the saliva slows down giving you a dry mouth. Without enough saliva, dead cells accumulate in your mouth which are not cleaned as you don’t have enough saliva. The decomposition of these cells causes bad odor. As your sleep, your mouth naturally becomes dry and even drier, if you breathe through your mouth. It is necessary to see your dentists in case of long-lasting bad breath because medical conditions like chronic lung infections, lung abscesses, cancers, GERD and certain metabolic disorders. Even people with sinus infections, bronchitis, kidney failure etc. may have bad breath.

Fight Mouth Odour

  • Brush and Floss! Oral hygiene is very important for good oral health. We have a new toothbrush in the market that thinks of brushing the tongue too. Buy it or not, it is good to brush your tongue gently in the morning to get rid of the bacteria accumulated. Never forget your tongue cleaners as well. It is sensible to clean your braces and mouth guards regularly. Mouthwashes and sugar-less mints can help you at work place and social gatherings. Mint can further mask the odour for you.
  • If you have bad breath due to dry mouth don’t fuss. Chew a gum or suck a fruit to get the saliva running. Once it starts running it will wipe the area clean and odourless. Go for chewing gums with Xylitol instead of sugar. We don’t want to end up with cavities fighting an odorous mouth.
  • Eat fibre rich foods which are chewy.  They will increase the secretion of salivary glands.
  • Eating plain yogurt can reduce the hydrogen sulphide smell.
  • Cinnamon contains an essential oil which can destroy the dental bacteria. Smart gum lovers can replace their regular gums with cinnamon flavoured gums.
  • Fruits like berries and citrus fruits like lemon and orange can prevent the bacteria too. But avoid them if you have dry mouth.
  • Drink lots of water!

Wisely observe, note down and avoid foods which cause you mouth odour. Consult your doctor about the medications you use just in case they are the ones causing the odour.
