How to Achieve Complete Wellbeing in Those Golden Years!

The outlook of the world had changed a lot over the years. If youngsters have changed in the eyes of the world so too have the seniors. Even seniors have access to a lot of knowledge and new wisdom through the internet and other media.  Here’s a brief, yet, consolidated post on how to cope with old age all by yourself. Ageing is an unavoidable part of life. Even with a lot of technological and scientific innovations, ageing still happens at its own pace. We really are not bothered about our increasing number of years or the thickness of our glasses but the growing number of ailments that comes with silver hair. Old age is often accompanied with arthritis, dementia, senility, high blood pressure (alias the silent killer), high cholesterol, osteoporosis, heart issues and more. Other chronic conditions elders have to cope with include enlarged prostate, gout, IBS, incontinence, tinnitus, cataract, glaucoma and teeth problems all leading to deteriorated self confidence and insecurity. Old age does not sound devastating like it used to as most elders are quite capable of taking care of themselves. For some, ageing may start as early as forty (remember those little silvers on your beard at 30) while it may start worrying some others only when they turn 60. But ageing inevitably happens to all.
  • Age related diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases are on the rise all over the world. Researchers point out that bad diet habits in the younger days are the real culprit behind the scenario. Processed and fast foods high in saturated and transfats are equally unhealthy for the heart and the brain. The human brain uses fatty acids from food to create cells that enable you to think and feel. Hence, your food plays a big part in how you think, feel, behave and react. There are around 3 pounds mass of fatty tissue in the human brain that controls your day to day activities. But eating a lot of fatty foods impairs mental performance and makes one lethargic. Include foods that are rich in omega-3 EFAs for brain nourishment, mental acuity and to slow down ageing. Ginkgo biloba is a great herb to boost your mental agility.
  • Arthritis is a painful and annoying condition that can fill your cabinet with a variety of capsules and pain relief gels.  Try horsetail or nettle tea, which can be taken in addition to omega 3s. For omega 3s eat mackerel, salmon, sardines and herring or take Omega 3 supplements. Walking, swimming and aerobics can be made an integral part of life.
  • Urinary incontinence can be treated easily with the help of herbs like cardamom. Also learn kegel exercises for relief.
  • High blood pressure shouldn’t be a worry if you can control your diet. Eat low sodium, high fibre with lots of vegetables and fruits.
  • If you can follow a light diet avoiding fried foods, salt, meat, and foods high in saturated fats, cholesterol can be easily dealt with. Take green leafy vegetables for support.
  • Practice good hygiene! If an old member of the family cannot keep himself clean be sure to help him with it.
  • Get some regular activity. Physical activity is a must for the young and the old alike. You need to move around moderately even in your old age but at your own comfortable pace.
  • Eat reduced amount of food (especially oily, sweet, fatty and starchy foods) as you age and yet make sure that it is healthy and nutritious. Eat according to your age and weight.
  • Quit smoking and avoid alcohol consumption. You’ve enjoyed all those in your yesteryears and now that retirement has hit, stay away from unhealthy habits.
  • Be active and creative. Past 60 doesn’t mean retirement from life. Cultivate healthy habits and new hobbies, which can keep your brain alert and active. Play scrabble, crossword, chess, sudoku, etc., which exercise the brain along with helping your grandchildren with their homework and games. Spend some time gardening to be out in nature.
  • If you are healthy and wealthy enough to travel, go places with your spouse.
  • Read books and enrich your knowledge. You can still go back to learning new things on the internet or by reading new books. This will enable you to remain in touch with the fast paced world and pave way to your increased self confidence.
  • If you like, join a senior citizens' club or other communities to get rid of any possible loneliness and inactivity.
  • Ignore your ailments. What I mean is take your medicines and medical advice but do not allow your health issues get the better of you.
  • Faith is often a rescuer to seniors as they feel the world around is slipping away from their grip. Faith and belief would help to keep your principles and your disciplined life intact.
